Summer Time

There was little that was more awesome to me than summer vacation as a kid. I looked forward to that endless weekend all school year long. It wasn't because I hated school, I actually loved school, but nothing beat the freedom that came with summer vacation.

Summer vacation meant days I could spend anyway I wanted.

I could read, all day until the words started moving into each other and my eyelids became so heavy with sleep that I passed out. I could write uninterrupted. Pages and pages of stories. Never finishing any of them. But that was okay, because they were just for me. Playing in my backyard with my siblings, my cousins and sometimes the neighborhood kids. Days spent at the mall or at the local amusement park people watching. Days spent talking on the phone.

Camping trips. Swimming. Hiking. Hanging out with my folks. Bike rides. BBQs.

Nothing but good times. Happy memories.

I remember my junior year of high school thinking this is it. I'll never have a summer vacation like this again. Unless the hubby and I hit the lotto, I never will. I hope that Animal finds his summer vacations as free and relaxing as I did and that he remembers them just as fondly.

  2. Your post is similar to mine :)). I loved my summer vacations. It was the best part about going to school. I hope my kids enjoy their summers as much as I enjoyed mine.

  3. I loved my childhood summer vacations too. It was so nice to have all that time to do what I wanted. I spent a lot of time reading my favorite books and just playing outside. Funny, my kids don't seem to know how to do that-maybe this year I'll get them trained!

    1. Your kids are young. At their age it was all endless barbie games and the backyard in kiddie pools :)

  4. I wish I wasn't dreading this summer vacation as much as I am. But I'm dead center in the middle of The Kid's spring break and it's driving me crazy!

    1. It's most definitely the same when you're the parent. I'm sure my mom didn't look forward to summer vacation even a quarter of what I did.

  5. I want a summer vacation. It's just not the same having the request time off of work, ignore the work E-mails and pay obscene money just to lay on a beach somewhere. Bring me back to high school!

    1. Right? As a teacher (even at a year round school) I do get a little time off w/o requesting, but certainly not a summer vacations worth...

  6. Your summers as a kid sound exactly like mine!! Reading and writing were always at the top of my list, too, although I did also spend hours playing outside with friends and family. HEY--THANKS for grabbing my blog button! Do you have one I can get for my blog?

    1. When are you going to link up some Thursday? Jen assigns the topic each Thursday so you have a whole week to write...
